The Government believes that the Pupil Premium Grant, a funding stream first available in the 2012/13 financial year, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers.
Funding is also available for Looked After Children and children Adopted from Care, together with children of families in the services. This funding, specifically targeted at tackling disadvantage, must reach the pupils who need the additional support it brings the most. Each year the Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and is clearly identifiable in the school’s budgeting. It is for schools to decide how this funding is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.
